A beard trim is mostly about two lines: the one under the jaw and the one across the cheek. Set them in the wrong place and a good beard looks untidy no matter how well the length is blended. Set them right and the beard frames the face on its own.
So that is where the time goes. The length gets taken down where it needs to come down, the cheek line and neckline get set clean, and the whole thing is checked against your face rather than against a diagram.
Add it to a haircut and the two get balanced against each other in the same sitting, which is the way it should be done.
